What working with Rob and Nick is like
I was honestly surprised by how easy the whole process was, and I’m so happy with how everything turned out.
Thanks again to Rob and the team!
Very pleased with the product and service and would highly recommend them. We had some very happy children swimming in time for summer.
A big thank you to Rob, Nick and the entire team!
We were pushing for time to have it installed and operating before the Christmas break.
The team delivered the pool and we got to enjoy it over the break which was awesome.
The install team were great, and the buisness side have been helpful in the handover and with the process moving into the completion and compliance.
Thanks Rob & Nick.
Your yard sets the shape
No mould, no compromise. Your concrete pool is built on site to fit the space you actually have.
Why concrete
Shaped to your block, not a mould
A fibreglass pool arrives finished, so your yard has to fit around it. A concrete pool flips that. Steel is tied on site, concrete is sprayed over it, and your pool takes exactly the shape your space allows.
Any shape or size
Long and lean for laps, square for a courtyard, curved around a garden bed. You choose the size, not a factory catalogue.
Sloping or awkward blocks
Turn a tricky slope into a feature. Built in place, a concrete pool can step down the fall of your block or rise partly out of the ground.
No crane lift
No finished pool has to be lifted over your house, so tight side access and overhead wires won't stand between you and a pool.
Steps and seats where you want them
Steps and seating are formed as part of your pool, placed exactly where you'll use them.
Straight answers
The builder who builds both
Most concrete pool builders only sell concrete, so concrete is always their answer. Pelagic Pools builds both fibreglass and concrete pools, so when Rob recommends concrete for your yard, you know it's because it's the right pool, not the only one on offer.
You'll get straight answers on shape, budget and timing before you sign anything, and you'll deal directly with Rob, every time.
Design your pool
Sketch your concrete pool
Pick a shape, your steps and a finish, and watch your pool come to life. It's built on site, so the size and shape are entirely yours.
Your sketch: freeform shape, corner steps, glass bead finish.
Like what you see? Rob will size it to your yard at your free on-site quote.
Choose the colour of your water

Interior finishes
The finish sets the colour of your water

Concrete or fibreglass
What concrete makes possible
A fibreglass pool comes from a mould. A concrete pool is designed for your yard. Here's what that freedom gives you.
| Feature | Concrete pool | Fibreglass pool |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Any shape you can imagine, from soft curves to sharp architectural lines | Chosen from a moulded range |
| Size and depth | Set by your yard and the way you swim | Set by the mould, from 2.6m to 12.5m long |
| Sloping blocks | Stepped, tiered or built partly out of the ground | Best on flat or gently sloping yards |
| Getting it in | Steel and concrete carried or pumped in, no crane lift | Delivered whole, often lifted in by crane |
| Steps and seating | Shaped and placed exactly where you want them | Part of the moulded shell design |
| Interior | Tile, quartz render, pebble, glass bead or stone | Gelcoat in the range of colours |
| Years ahead | A shell built to last decades, with a finish you can refresh or change | Colour set when the pool is made |
How it works
From first visit to first swim
Phase 1
Plan
Before any digging starts
- 01
Free on-site quote
Rob comes to you, measures up and checks access and slope. Talk through shape, finish and budget, then get a clear, upfront quote with no obligation.
- 02
Design and permits
Your design is locked in and Pelagic Pools handles the permits and approvals, so there's no paperwork for you to chase.
Phase 2
Build
Typically 8 to 16 weeks across Melbourne
- 03
Excavation and steel
Your pool is dug to shape, steel reinforcement is tied and the plumbing goes in. This is where it starts to take form.
- 04
Concrete and curing
Concrete is sprayed over the steel and shaped, then cured for around 28 days to build its strength.
- 05
Finish and coping
Your chosen finish, coping and equipment go in, and your pool starts to look like the one you sketched.
Phase 3
Swim
Your first swim
- 06
Fill and handover
Your pool is filled, cleaned and balanced, and a comprehensive handover shows you how everything works. Then it's time to dive in.

Cost
What sets the cost of your concrete pool
Every concrete pool is built to order, so the cost comes down to your yard and the pool you want. A compact plunge pool sits at one end, while a large pool with a spa and full tile sits at the other. Your free on-site quote shows exactly where yours sits.
Size and depth
More pool means more digging, steel, concrete and finish.
Access and soil
Tight access, rock or heavy clay can mean smaller machines and more labour.
Interior finish
Render and pebble cost less than full tile or stone.
Built-in features
Spas, ledges, heating and lighting all add to the price.
Surrounds
Coping, paving, fencing and landscaping are often quoted separately, so check what's included.
Your free on-site quote is clear and upfront, so you'll know what you're paying for before work begins.
Permits and compliance
The paperwork, handled
Every in-ground pool in Victoria needs a building permit before work starts, then a compliant safety barrier, council registration and a certificate of barrier compliance once it's built. Pelagic Pools manages the permits and approvals for your build, so you can focus on the fun part.
Registration and the four-yearly barrier check are the owner's responsibility under Victorian rules.
- Building permit issued before excavation
- Safety barrier built to Australian Standard AS 1926.1
- Pool registered with your local council
- Certificate of barrier compliance (Form 23) lodged within 30 days, then every 4 years

Questions
Concrete pool questions, answered
What affects the cost of a concrete pool in Melbourne?
Every concrete pool is built to order, so size, access, soil, interior finish and built-in features like a spa all move the price. Your free on-site quote gives you a clear figure for your yard.
How long does it take to build a concrete pool?
Allow around 8 to 16 weeks from the first dig to handover, including about 28 days for the concrete to cure. Design and the building permit come before that, so it pays to start early.
When should I start if I want to swim by summer?
Start early. Getting your quote and permit underway in autumn or winter lines construction up with the warmer months, so you're swimming when summer arrives.
Is a concrete pool or a fibreglass pool better?
It depends on your yard and what you want from it. Concrete wins on shape, size, depth and tricky blocks, and gives you a pool designed entirely around you. Fibreglass is quicker to install. Pelagic Pools builds both, so Rob can show you exactly what concrete makes possible on your block.
Can you build a concrete pool on a sloping block or with narrow access?
Yes. A concrete pool is built in place, so it can be stepped, tiered or built partly out of the ground. Materials are carried or pumped in, so you don't need room for a finished pool to pass through.
Will Melbourne's clay soil crack a concrete pool?
Reactive clay moves as it wets and dries, so soil is one of the first things to look at. That's why every quote starts with a site visit rather than a price off a list.
Do I need a permit for a concrete pool in Victoria?
Yes. Every in-ground pool needs a building permit before work starts, a safety barrier built to AS 1926.1, council registration and a certificate of barrier compliance. Pelagic Pools manages the permits and approvals for your build.
How long does a concrete pool last?
The concrete shell is built to last for decades. The interior finish is the part that wears, and most render and pebble finishes are refreshed every 10 to 15 years or so. Tiled interiors last longer.
Are concrete pools harder to look after?
A little more than fibreglass. Concrete needs regular brushing and careful chemical balancing, but automated chlorination and a good cleaner take most of that effort off your hands.
Can I heat a concrete pool?
Yes. Solar heating, a heat pump and a pool cover all help extend Melbourne's swimming season. A cover also cuts evaporation and holds the heat in overnight.
